Abiding Under the Shadow of the Almighty

How can one be assured of abiding under God’s protection? Psalm 91 tells us:

1He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.  4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.  5Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;  6Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.  7A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.  8Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.  9Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;  10There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.  11For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.  12They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.  13Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.  14Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.  15He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.  16With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Verse 14-16 shows us the benefit of having an intimate relationship with the Lord. Let us now explore some who abode under the Shadow of the Almighty. This is a glimpse of the protection that God provided for Elisha because Elisha trusted in him: Top of FormBottom of For2 Kings 6:11-23 (King James Version)

11Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel? 12And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.  13And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan. 14Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about. 15And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?  16And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. 17And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.  18And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.  19And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. But he led them to Samaria.  20And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria, that Elisha said, LORD, open the eyes of these men, that they may see. And the LORD opened their eyes, and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst of Samaria. 21And the king of Israel said, shall I smite them? shall I smite them?  22And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest and they saw; and, behold, they were in the midst to Elisha, when he saw  them, my father of Samaria.  21And the king of Israel said unto Elisha, when he saw thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.  23And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

Our next witness is Daniel in the lions den:

Daniel 6: 1It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty  princes, which should be over the whole kingdom; 2 And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes  might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.  3Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.  4Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.  5Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.  6Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live for ever.  7All the presidents of the kingdom, the governors, and the princes, the counsellors, and the captains, have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.  8Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.  9Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.  10Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.  11Then these men assembled, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.  12Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king's decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The  king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.  13T hen answered they and said before the king, That Daniel, which is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.  14Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore displeased with himself, and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him: and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.  15Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.  16Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. Now the king spake and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will deliver thee.  17And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords; that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.  18Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him.  19Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.  20And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?  21Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.  22My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.  23Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.  24And the king commanded, and they brought those men which had accused Daniel, and they cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions the den.  25Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you. had the mastery of them, and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of 26I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.  27He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.  28So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

From these testimonies of Elisha and Daniel, you can see that it pays to dwell in the secret place of the Most High; because the provisions are that He allows you to abide under His shadow. If you will examine each of the testimonies, you will see that it was prayer that activated God’s protection. This should encourage you to develop a prayer life with God. If you don’t have one, today is a good day to start. Always remember to pray your prayers according to God’s Word, and you have the assurance of praying in God’s will, because His Word and His Will are One.

Until Next Time,
